Narrative Theory - Todorov

Task - Watch a TV drama and make notes on it's narrative structure.

Again, I shall be focusing on Breaking Bad as this is the only TV series I watch at the minute and I will also be studying the episodes 'One Minute' and 'I See You' as they are the freshest in my mind, for the reason that these are the most recent episodes that I have watched.

1) An initial state of equilibrium (usually calm and settled)

Stage of narrative and basic details -  A family are in a back garden with cars passing by, there is also swings.Everything is very calm as 2 young children are playing with a teddy bear and their grandfather is sitting watching.
How does this effect the episodes overall, why is it effective? - The start of the episode is actually set in the past. The 2 boys are actually Tuco's cousins are are viscous and go on to try and kill Hank later on in the episode.

2) A disruption of equilibrium at some point.

Stage of narrative and basic details - The stage is at Jesse's house which is in a relatively nice area. Hank storms in and start beating up Jesse (taking him down and then punching him in the face repeatedly)
How does this effect the episodes overall, why is it effective?  - Later on in the episode Hank is suspended from work for attacking someone (as he is a police officer). He then has his gun took off him and later on has to defend himself from 2 people who have weapons, without his gun.

3) Recognition that there has been a disruption of the initial state.

Stage of narrative and basic details - Hank, lying down looking up at the sky, we see things from his perspective as eventually he blacks out.
How does this effect the episodes overall, why is it effective? - Hank is one of the main characters in the whole series so this effects not only the episode but the whole series dramatically, we do not know if Hank is going to die so it creates a state of anxiousness amongst the audience.

4)  An attempt to repair the situation.

Stage of narrative and basic details - In the waiting room at the hospital, we see the whole of Hank's family are there looking through the window to see doctors trying the help him.
How does this effect the episodes overall, why is it effective? - It creates hope amongst the family and all of the DEA agents who are waiting to see how he progresses.

5) A reinstatement of equilibrium.

Stage of narrative and basic details - Again, at the hospital, all of Hanks family and his co-workers are told that Hank will not die and he will recover eventually.
How does this effect the episodes overall, why is it effective? - It is good as the Mexicans have not succeeded in what they wanted to do and everyone is glad that he will be better than assumed.
